thyssenkrupp Materials NA, a trusted leader in materials distribution and manufacturing solutions, is making a significant investment in its future with the expansion of operations in Santa Teresa, New Mexico. This move not only strengthens the company’s ability to serve power distribution customers across North America and Mexico but also enhances supply chain efficiency.

Strengthening the Supply Chain and Creating Jobs

Supported by the New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD), this expansion brings economic incentives aimed at job creation and workforce development in the region. Copper and Brass Sales, a division of thyssenkrupp Materials NA, will lease an 86,000-square-foot facility dedicated to manufacturing services for power distribution components. This facility will focus on customer-specific solutions, including complex cutting, kitting, and just-in-time (JIT) services—demonstrating a commitment to streamlining production processes and reducing lead times.

As part of the initiative, the State of New Mexico has pledged $500,000 from the Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) job-creation fund, helping to support the estimated 90 new jobs that will be generated in the region. Additionally, in February, EDD allocated $253,630 from the Job Training Incentive Program (JTIP) to train the first 21 employees, who will earn an average hourly wage of $24.52.

A Strategic Move for Long-Term Growth

James Patsakos, president of Manufacturing Services at thyssenkrupp Materials NA, highlighted the importance of this expansion:

“Expanding into New Mexico is a strategic move that strengthens our ability to serve power distribution customers across North America and Mexico with greater efficiency and responsiveness. Santa Teresa offers the ideal location, infrastructure, and workforce to support our long-term growth while enhancing supply chain resilience for our customers. The support from the State of New Mexico through LEDA and JTIP demonstrates a shared commitment to economic development, and we look forward to building a strong presence in the region as we grow our team and operations.”

With five other manufacturing centers across North America—including Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Atlanta, and Saltillo, Mexico—thyssenkrupp Materials NA strategically selected Santa Teresa for its proximity to key suppliers and power distribution customers in the U.S. Southwest and Mexico.

New Mexico’s Competitive Edge for Manufacturers

New Mexico’s border region continues to attract manufacturers due to its strong workforce, competitive costs, and logistical advantages. EDD Cabinet Secretary Rob Black emphasized the state’s appeal:

“New Mexico’s border region is the best location for manufacturers looking to leverage a strong workforce, competitive costs, and logistical advantages while servicing both international and U.S.-based customers.”

Local leaders have also welcomed the investment with enthusiasm. Scott Andrews, Doña Ana County Manager, shared his excitement:

“On behalf of Doña Ana County, I am thrilled to welcome thyssenkrupp to our community. Their investment in Santa Teresa will not only bring new opportunities for career advancement but also further strengthen our region’s manufacturing prowess and our local economy. We look forward to a successful partnership and are excited to see the positive impact they will have on our residents.”

Santa Teresa: A Growing Hub for Manufacturing and Trade

The Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance (MVEDA) played a key role in assisting thyssenkrupp with site selection and strategic planning for its New Mexico expansion. Davin Lopez, president & CEO of MVEDA, underscored Santa Teresa’s emergence as a major player in manufacturing and supply chain access:

“The New Mexico Borderplex region offered thyssenkrupp strategic locational advantages due to its proximity to key supply chain partners such as Schneider Electric and EATON, amongst others. This is another indication that Santa Teresa has emerged and is being recognized as a major hub in the U.S. for manufacturing, supply chain access, and cross-border trade.”

Looking Ahead

thyssenkrupp’s expansion in Santa Teresa marks another milestone in New Mexico’s growing role as a hub for advanced manufacturing and logistics. With state-backed incentives and a supportive business environment, this move further solidifies the region’s attractiveness for industrial investment.
